You’ll probably soon know someone who is. South Park recently returned for a fourteenth season, and has already poked fun at Tiger Woods, Sarah Jessica Parker, and the book Catcher In The Rye. This week it finally set it’s sight on social networking site Facebook in an episode called You Have 0 Friends. As the boys attempt to outdo each other, Kyle adds the lonely Kip Drordy to his Facebook friends, who is known to everyone on the site for having zero friends. As soon as he does this, everyone else starts to ‘unfriend’ Kyle at an alarming rate…
It was another great episode, taking some funny swipes at certain aspects of the social networking craze, even if perhaps it’s a slightly easy target. It also features some great sequences in a Tron-like environment, when Stan gets “sucked in to Facebook” after all his best efforts to avoid it. The character of Kip is great, and the time he spends with his new “friend” offers up some brilliant jokes. You can see a brief clip from the episode at the end of this article.
As soon as the episode ended, not surprisingly, one of my first thoughts was to see if there was now a “real” Kip Drordy on Facebook, and I wasn’t disappointed. Of course there was, set up hours earlier, although if the page was set up by the show’s creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, I have no idea. I guess probably not, but it doesn’t really matter. As with so many Facebook viral trends, the number of fans is growing by the minute. A few hundred when I first looked, and up to almost 50,000 a day later. This will surely go up further after the episode airs in the UK (tonight) on the Comedy Central channel (Sky 126, Virgin 132).
South Park Season 14 continues for another three weeks before it takes it’s usual mid-season break, and will then return later in the year. Watch it if you can, it’s still the only show where no-one, or no thing is safe from lampooning.
